Internet and broadband
Nearly every household (97.8% in 2025) has internet access. Fibre and cable broadband from GO, Melita and Epic cover the islands with gigabit plans in most towns; standalone plans typically cost €25–45 a month (editorial range). Buses and many public spaces have free Wi-Fi.

Mobile and 5G
Three networks (GO, Melita, Epic) offer 4G nationally and 5G in populated areas; EU roaming rules apply for EU SIMs. Prepaid and contract plans with generous data are inexpensive.
Digital government
The e-ID, issued by Identità with the ID card or residence card, gives access to most government services online: tax, social security, vehicle licensing, planning, education and health records (myHealth).
Banking and payments
Online and mobile banking are standard; contactless cards and phone payments are accepted almost everywhere, including buses; electronic-money institutions and fintechs are widely used alongside banks.
E-commerce
Local retailers deliver island-wide; international e-commerce reaches Malta by post and courier, with customs on non-EU orders.
Technology sector
Gaming technology, fintech, software development, AI and blockchain companies cluster in the harbour area and at SmartCity in Kalkara; English-speaking, EU-based talent is the draw.
Remote work
Remote and hybrid work are common in gaming and finance. Non-EU remote workers employed abroad can apply for the Nomad Residence Permit (income threshold and health insurance required). MPRP holders may work remotely for foreign employers subject to tax and licensing rules; local employment requires a licence. Co-working spaces operate in Valletta, Sliema, St Julian's, Gżira and Victoria.
