Major industries

  • Tourism: over 2.5 million non-resident arrivals at accommodation in 2025, with hotels, restaurants, English-language schools and cruise calls.
  • Financial services: banking, insurance, funds and fintech regulated by the MFSA.
  • Remote gaming (iGaming): a leading EU licensing hub regulated by the Malta Gaming Authority, a major employer of international staff.
  • Technology and professional services: software, blockchain and AI start-ups, legal, accounting and corporate services.
  • Manufacturing: pharmaceuticals, electronics, medical devices and printing, much of it export-oriented.
  • Construction and real estate: a large and visible sector tied to population growth.
  • Maritime and aviation: one of the world's largest ship registers, the Freeport transhipment hub, aircraft registration and maintenance.

Trade and investment

Malta imports most goods (energy, food, vehicles) and exports services and high-value manufactured goods; foreign direct investment is concentrated in financial services, gaming and manufacturing. Malta Enterprise is the investment promotion agency.

The Central Bank of Malta and the European Commission publish projections; the NSO publishes quarterly national accounts.
