The rhythm of the year

Life follows the seasons: winter is quiet and green, spring brings the countryside into flower, summer is hot, loud with festas and fireworks and full of visitors, and autumn brings the first rains and the lampuki season. Weekends revolve around the sea, family lunches and the promenade.

Social life

Maltese social life is family- and village-centred; international residents build networks through work, sports, parent groups and meetups. English is spoken everywhere, which makes Malta easy to arrive in and sometimes slow to go deep in without Maltese.

Neighbourhoods

The harbour towns are urban and busy; central villages are residential; the north is seasonal; the south-east is traditional; Gozo is rural. Each locality guide describes the character in objective terms.

Work and time

Standard working hours are around 40 a week; commuting distances are short but peak traffic is slow. Shops, government offices and some services keep shorter afternoon hours in summer.

What residents value

The sea and climate, safety, the scale of the country, English-language services, the cultural calendar and the ease of travel within Schengen.

What residents find difficult

Housing costs in the harbour area, construction noise and dust, traffic and parking, summer heat, bureaucracy that mixes online and in-person steps, and the small size of the island after a few years. See Expat life for practical challenges.

Where to start

Cost of living, Healthcare, Education, Transport and Things to do, then the property marketplace and the MPRP if you are a non-EU family considering residence.
