Supermarkets
National chains (Lidl, Pavi/Pama, Welbee's, Greens, Smart, Tower) and many independent grocers; most larger supermarkets open seven days with reduced Sunday hours. Village shops and bakeries sell bread, dairy and produce.

Shopping centres and retail streets
The Point at Tigné (Sliema), Bay Street (St Julian's), the Plaza (Sliema), Pama and Pavi (Mosta/Qormi), Main Street (Paola) and Republic Street and Merchants Street in Valletta are the main retail destinations; Bisazza Street and the Strand in Sliema have international brands.
Markets
The Marsaxlokk Sunday market, the Valletta Monti market (Merchants Street), Ta' Qali farmers' market, Birgu's Sunday market and village open-air markets on fixed weekdays.
Opening hours
Shops generally open Monday to Saturday from around 9 am to 7 pm, with some lunchtime closures in villages; Sunday trading is limited to supermarkets, pharmacies on rota and tourist areas; most shops close on public holidays and festa days.
Practical notes
VAT is 18% and included in prices; the beverage container deposit-return scheme adds a refundable deposit; EU consumer rights apply to returns and guarantees. See the directory.
