112 (emergency)
Police, ambulance and fire
The Malta Police Force has district stations in most localities and its headquarters in Floriana. Ambulances are run by the public health service; the Civil Protection Department provides fire-fighting and rescue, including sea rescue with the Armed Forces of Malta.
General public safety
Malta is a small country with a low rate of violent crime by European standards. The usual precautions apply in nightlife areas (Paceville) and against pickpocketing in crowded tourist spots and on buses. Report crimes at the nearest police station or via 112.
Road safety
Driving is on the left; roads are busy and driving standards vary. Pedestrians should use crossings and take care on roads without pavements; motorcyclists and cyclists are over-represented in injuries. Drink-driving limits are enforced.
Sea safety
Swim at beaches with lifeguards in season and heed red-flag warnings; currents at Golden Bay and Għajn Tuffieħa and jellyfish blooms are the common hazards. Boating and diving are regulated; dive with licensed centres.
Weather hazards
Summer heatwaves (stay hydrated, avoid midday sun) and autumn flash floods on low-lying roads are the main weather risks.
Visitors
EU visitors should carry their EHIC; others need travel insurance. The 112 number works from foreign mobiles. Consular assistance is available from embassies and consulates in Malta.
